  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (for glaze)
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
  • 12 tbsp milk (for thinning, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and stir in vanilla extract.
  4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture until just combined.
  5. Spread batter into prepared pan and bake for 22–25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely.
  6. For the glaze, melt butter in a saucepan until golden brown, then whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla bean paste until smooth.
  7. Pour glaze over cooled bars and let set before slicing.
