Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz loaf of French bread
  • 3 ¾ cups whole milk
  • 1 ½ cup heavy cream
  • 7 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ¼ cup sugar
  • Optional: zest of 1/2 an orange

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cut the French bread into bite-sized cubes and let them dry on a baking sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the whole milk, heavy cream, eggs, vanilla extract, and sugar until smooth. If using orange zest, add it now.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes and gently toss to coat. Let sit for 30 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
  4. Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish and bake for approximately 120 minutes or until golden brown on top and set in the center.
  5. Meanwhile, prepare the vanilla sauce by dissolving sugar in water over medium heat; stir in vanilla extract when done.
