  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/8 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 ounce cream cheese (cold)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract

Instructions

  1. Make tangzhong by whisking together 1/4 cup flour and 3/4 cup water over low heat until thickened. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine 3 ½ cups flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk heavy cream, whole milk, egg, and vanilla extract; add the tangzhong.
  4. Gradually mix wet ingredients into dry until combined; knead in softened butter until smooth.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl to rise for about an hour or until doubled.
  6. Prepare filling by creaming butter with sugars; add egg and vanilla, then mix in flour and baking powder.
  7. Roll dough into a rectangle, spread filling evenly, sprinkle chocolate chips, and roll tightly.
  8. Cut into equal pieces and place in a greased dish to rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for about 30 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Mix glaze ingredients together and drizzle over warm rolls before serving.
