Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1 tsp instant dry yeast
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 cup milk or water
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 8½ oz mozzarella cheese, cubed
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp fresh rosemary (chopped)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp water
  • red pepper flakes (optional)
  • marinara sauce (for dipping)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix bread flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and milk or water until no dry flour remains. Let rest for 10 minutes.
  2. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic. Allow it to rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1–1.5 hours).
  3. Prepare mozzarella by cutting it into small cubes. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into small balls.
  4. Insert cheese into each ball and shape them into a Christmas tree on parchment paper.
  5. Preheat oven to 425°F (218°C). Apply an egg wash over the dough balls.
  6. Bake for about 20 minutes until golden brown. Brush with melted butter mixed with herbs before serving with marinara.
